Program Description

The Honours Bachelor of Healthcare Management is a new and innovative interdisciplinary degree focused on leadership development, experiential learning, and integrative thinking skills critical to the management of complex health systems.

Students will take part in field, lab, and mentorship experiences from year one forward to apply their learning in real world contexts. The curriculum provides a solid foundation in business management and health administration with specialized courses in health informatics, cross-cultural and global health, program planning, health law, mediation, patient safety, impact of chronic disease and aging populations, research, innovation, and leadership.

This degree program fills a gap in the current job market by preparing graduates to tackle the needs and priorities for financial sustainability, evidence-informed decision making, health promotion/illness prevention, modern management, leadership, and patient-centred care, as outlined by the Conference Board of Canada Health Summit.

LEADS CanadaSeneca's Honours Bachelor of Healthcare Management is the first in Canada to be designed around the Canadian College of Health Leaders LEADS Leadership Framework.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility:

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including six Grade 12 (U) or (M) courses with a minimum overall average of 65%,  or a mature applicant (21 years or older and has been out of high school for a minimum of two years). Mature applicants should disclose all previous postsecondary transcripts which may be used for admission decisions.

Required courses - minimum final grade of 65% in each:

  • English: Grade 12 ENG 4(U)
  • Mathematics: any Grade 12 (U)

Applicants must meet Seneca English Proficiency requirements for degree programs.

Prior to participating in field placement, students must have the following:

  • A valid certificate in Basic Rescuer Level Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Health Care Provider
  • A current medical and immunization report
  • A current clear police record check
  • A current record of mask fit testing

According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, the healthcare sector faces numerous human resource challenges including recruitment and retention, an aging workforce, and a shortage of skilled professional staff. At the national, provincial and local levels, economic indicators and labour market projections indicate an increased demand for qualified professionals in Health Administration.

Whether earning a first degree or returning to school for career advancement, graduates of the Honours Bachelor of Healthcare Management will have a number of career and employment options across public, private, non-profit, and for profit domains of care. You will be well prepared for careers such as program managers, project leaders, healthcare consultants, medical records and healthcare finance managers, or you can start your own business.

To align with national directions in the development of leaders in healthcare, the Honours Bachelor of Healthcare Management has been designed around the Canadian College of Health Leaders LEADS Framework, representing best practice in the key skills, behaviors, abilities, and knowledge required of healthcare leaders. As a result, program graduates will be well positioned to pursue the Certified Health Executive designation through the Canadian College of Health Leaders.

In addition, program graduates will have the required knowledge to pursue the Canadian Institute of Management's Certified in Management (CIM) and the Professional Manager (P.Mgr) professional designations.

Graduates benefit from a curriculum reflecting national industry expectations and international standards of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.

Post‐graduate studies at an Ontario Graduate Certificate or Master's level in Health or Business Administration programs provide additional options for career advancement.

Work-Integrated Learning

Mandatory Degree Work Term

A work experience that includes at least one term in a formal work environment. The work term(s) may be a paid or unpaid position that is completed between two academic semesters and requires a minimum of 420 hours of work. Students must be in good standing and meet all identified requirements prior to participating in the work experience. The successful completion of the work term(s) is required for graduation. Eligibility for participation does not guarantee that a work position will be secured. Additional fees are required for the mandatory degree work term regardless of success in securing a work position.

Transfer Credit/Pathways

The Degree and Credit Transfer Office provides a number of services for students continuing their education at Seneca, and for graduating students considering degree transfer options.

Through transfer agreements and institution partnerships, graduates of this Seneca College program may be eligible for credit at various post-secondary institutions. Please refer to the Degree Transfer Guide for more information.

Transfer Credit may be granted for courses deemed equivalent to courses at Seneca that have been completed at recognized postsecondary institutions. Additional information is available online.
